Merrick's Hurting In Connecticut Walk - Orange, CT

Merrick Alpert waves, right, as he leads a group of supporters, above, as they walk along Route 34 from Orange into West Haven Friday.  Merrick, who is seeking the Democratic nomination to run for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Christopher J. Dodd, walked 70 miles in 5 days through Connecticut towns, visiting with community leaders and residents.  For more information on the campaign, visit http:// merrickforachange.com

Since announcing his candidacy in May, Merrick has been traveling the state, meeting and speaking with Democratic Town Committees, concerned voters, and diverse community and business leaders - with the specific intention to better understand the unique challenges that face local communities, and the ways in which the needs of Connecticut's citizens can be better met.

Concerned with current efforts to rebuild our struggling economy, Merrick commenced a walk through central Connecticut in early January, to bring attention to the fact that the people of Connecticut are hurting, and that the powerful in Washington and those on Wall Street are unaware of their hardships.

Merrick began his 80-mile Hurting In Connecticut march along US Route 5, at the Connecticut-Massachusetts border and walked approximately 15 miles each day, stopping along the way to visit with various small businesses, food pantries, soup kitchens, senior centers, homeless shelters, hospitals, family resource centers, health care centers, and community based nonprofit organizations.

On The Road With Merrick

On Wednesday when James Mosher of the Norwich Bulletin asked Richard Blumenthal if he would debate me again, Mr. Blumenthal responded: "As you can see I am focused on my job as attorney general." So apparently, Mr. Blumenthal is so busy working in his official capacity as attorney general that he cannot take one hour to stand before the people of Connecticut and discuss the issues facing the state, and how he would recommend addressing these problems and better serving the needs of our citizens. He simply has no time for campaign events. No time at all. Well, from the looks of it that little fib lasted about 5 hours, because later that same day Mr. Blumenthal attended a political event with the Enfield Democratic Town Committee. His staff tweeted after the political event: "Thank you to the Enfield DTC, you've stood by me & I need you again. We can win as democrats if we work together." And if that wasn't enough evidence that he attended a partisan political event after saying he had no time for such things, you can find the picture on Flickr. Official capacity? Really now. When statements like this are made (or gems like, "My lawsuits create jobs"), does Mr. Blumenthal think no one is going to check the facts? Just how long has this stuff been going on for?
