In the coming months, I hope to see a spirited contest between all the candidates in the Senate race, not just a handing-off of the senatorial washroom keys and a change of the signage in Washington.

With all the attention Richard Blumenthal has been getting in his new position as Christopher Dodd's heir-apparent, might I suggest that Connecticut voters look beyond this past week's events and take a look at Merrick Alpert?

Unlike Dodd or his dauphin, Alpert has real-world experience, from serving our country in Bosnia (earning the Joint Service Commendation Medal) to starting and running small businesses.

With the many security threats our country faces, and the economic crisis our current senator was involved in creating, I want Connecticut's next senator to be fresh, from outside the broken system and to have the kind of knowledge and experience that Alpert brings to the table.

What does it say about someone who tells a reporter that he is too busy in his official capacity to engage in a public debate and then has their press spokesperson reiterate the message, only to be caught attending campaign event after campaign event beginning on the very same day that they told the original fable? Decades of well manicured facade fall under the weight of the truth. Is this as good as it gets?
